WORD ON THE STREET: An archive for previous words of the day.
beseder: (Beh-seh-der) adj. descriptive term of approval; okay (Note: this is not a polite word to describe the food or service of others, and the tone of voice is very important when saying the word. To describe a positive emotion, use a very upbeat voice with congenial facial expressions.) (June 10)
bo'u nelekh:(we have no idea) phrase that means "Let's go!" When pronouncing the apostrophy, think of a quick throat stop between the vowels. As in the exclaimation "Uh'oh!" (May 30)
itona'i: (eye-tone-ai) noun. a journalist. (For plural, guys add "im" to the end of the word, girls add "ot.") (May 30)
Put the new words together in order to describe what happened to us today. The CBN News executive producer called from headquarters in the States to let us know that we needed to put up a live feed. We would normally get 24-hour notice for this type of shot, but today we had about two hours to put everything together. Camera, lights, and sound were all set up on the roof, with time to spare. Kim got to use the sweet headset to talk with the Virginia Beach producer as they tested the video and audio. Then, we learned that the satelite feed didn't connect (NOT our fault), so the bureau chief did his story live via phone. As soon as he did his closing tag, 'This is Chris Mitchell, CBN News, Jerusalem,' we heard that the satelite connection was ready. Great timing! Itona'im, bo'u nelekh!

shavuot: (shah-voo-ote) noun. Jewish holiday commemorating the time when God gave the Law (Hebrew: Torah) to Moses on Mount Sinai. Celebrated each year 50 days after Passover. Also celebrated by Christians as the Day of Pentecost (Greek for 'fiftieth day'), when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples in Jerusalem after Jesus ascended into Heaven. This year, Pentecost is Sunday, June 8th, while Shavuot is Monday, June 8-9th. Jewish tradition begins each day in the evening, so the celebration of Shavuot begins at sundown today! (June 8)
